ABOUT US

Read Gendler, owner, rider, Certified Instructor of the Pilates Method

read3.HEIC
read2.heic

Read first fell in love with horses at age 4 riding on a lead line behind her mom. At age nine she began forward seat lessons and was overjoyed to receive her first very own horse on her eleventh birthday. She spent the next two decades showing hunters and jumpers in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Virginia, as well as foxhunting in Kansas and Virginia. Her showing career culminated successfully showing her Grand Prix jumper, Jet Glory. Read continued riding for fun with her daughter until the age of forty. At this point Read took a break from horses to focus more on what would become a full time career as a fitness instructor.
Backing up to her college years, Read acquired a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Business Administration. Immediately following college Read worked for two years as a dance and music therapist in clinical settings with psychiatric patients from adolescents through geriatrics. She carried her strong beliefs in music and movement as catalysts for physical and emotional healing into her following 40 year career as a fitness professional.

She became a Certified Instructor of the Pilates Method in 1993, and ran her own Pilates studio Bodyproof, Inc. from 1999-2020. Read and her husband Steve enjoyed 10 years of competitive ballroom dancing. They carried their love of music and dancing to underserved children and volunteered teaching ballroom dance camps to the older summer campers of Vogel Alcove in Dallas where Read also volunteered teaching music and dancing to the 3-5 year olds.

Throughout her sixties Read experienced increasing arthritic pain in her neck and shoulder which caused her to stop ballroom dancing and limit her physical activities. In 2019 she underwent a surgical neck fusion and in 2021 a full shoulder replacement. For two years while rehabilitating herself with the Pilates Method and all her healing tools she had acquired through her career working with other people’s bodies, her goal was to return to riding. She thought just maybe she could learn dressage. She credits the Pilates Method with enabling her to continue as an athlete and become a dressage rider at age 71. She wants to share this impactful physical training with riders of all ages and abilities. She is excited to offer Pilates For Riders classes at North Haven Equestrian in the new fitness room of our new covered arena which will be completed soon.

Sylwia Reshel (Luzar)
Head Trainer, Barn Manager

North Haven Equestrian is most appreciative and excited to introduce Sylwia Reshel as Head Trainer and Barn Manager.
Sylwia learned the principles of English riding, horse care, and training in Poland, where she was born. She soon became recognized for her skills working with young horses, and horses deemed “difficult”. In 2010 she was awarded the English Riding Instructor Certification by the Polish Ministry of Sport. In 2017 Sylwia moved to the United States and began her American equestrian career at Michelle Lauber’s Legacy Hill Farms in Castle Rock, Colorado. There she was a dressage rider and working student who also assisted in training high end, imported warmbloods. She moved to Austin, with her then husband, after only eight months working in Colorado. She was hired at White Fences Equestrian Center as a fulltime trainer and instructor. She accompanied her clients as they competed in dressage shows.

She also developed dressage clients in the San Antonio area and worked with eventing riders. She continued her professional education by attending and participating in clinics taught by some of the world’s great dressage trainers and judges (Laura Graves, Allison Brock, Jeremy Steinberg, Micha Knol, Pati Pierucci, Nahshon Cook, Kathy Rowse, Ben Albright, Michael Klimke, Lilo Fiore, Jason Canton).

In 2021 she was employed by North Texas Equestrian Center in Wylie, Texas, as a trainer and instructor. There she met Read Gendler and ideas for North Haven Equestrian began to hatch. Sylwia knew she wanted to spend her life with horses by age 4. In Poland she grew up with parents who did not want her riding, saying it was too expensive and too dangerous. At 10 years of age Sylwia figured out how to save her lunch money and secretly take the bus to a local barn after school. There she cleaned stalls, fed, groomed, and watered horses in exchange for riding lessons. She soaked up every bit of horse care and riding knowledge that she could. She quickly gained good people skills by being friendly, helpful, solving problems and getting the job done, exactly what she is still doing today.

As a young adult she attended the University of Bari in Italy where she studied Linguistic Intermediation for the European Union. She worked the following eight years in the corporate world in Poland where she held high level management positions, focusing on quality of customer service in several regions and languages worldwide. Business intelligence, human resources and large-scale project management were also part of her job responsibilities. During these eight years she continued teaching riding and began learning the business of importing warmbloods from Europe to the U.S. In 2017 she immigrated to the United States where she has remained a fulltime equestrian professional, never returning to the corporate world. Sylwia is an avid reader and perpetual student. She always strives to learn ways to better help horses and riders progress and learn while enjoying their equestrian journey. She gained more insight into the minds and behaviors of horses from Natural Horsemanship trainer Michael Goheen and Liberty Trainer Patrick Sullivan. She was also very inspired by the book “The Psychology of Horse Training” (not available in English) by Krzysztof Skorupski, a famous Polish rider and veterinarian. She is passionate on the topics of horse anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, diseases and cures. She has taught children and adults with autism, para riders, blindness, PTSD/anxiety, ADHD, and low self-esteem. She has witnessed the positive effects that equestrian experience can have on these challenges and wants to learn more how to help. Sylwia comes to North Haven Equestrian with a full heart and complete dedication to creating a space where people can feel included, successful, respected, and happy. She plans to progress with her own showing experience as well as helping her students achieve their riding goals. Her mantras include “Never stop Learning,” “Play with the horse and work on yourself,” and “By taking one step at a time, and you will get to where you want to go.”

Misty Stracke
Assistant Barn Manager, Groom

mistystrackebio.heic

Misty's enthusiasm for horses began as a very young girl growing up on a ranch in central Texas. Although surrounded by quarter horses and rodeos she always had a dream of someday learning English riding. At age 12 she was given her very first horse, an older gray Quarter Horse mare named Bee, prior to owning her own horse she would take every opportunity she could to be around horses. She would visit her uncle's ranch in Medina where he had many horses that she could groom or ride, and she had several friends with horses that allowed her to gain some experience. As a freshman in high school she volunteered at an equine therapy center in San Antonio, this is where she learned the power of horses to heal and rehabilitate.

In high school Misty participated in Marching and Concert band, she has always been extremely hardworking, detail focused and a natural leader. She believes that anything you do should be done to the best of your ability, always striving for excellence. She contributes her time in music to her ability to push herself and stay focused on the little details.

Misty attended college and became an executive chef soon thereafter. She spent many years as a Managing Food Service Professional, thriving in a fast pace detail oriented environment. After moving to Plano she later left the food service industry and managed a shooting range in the area. In 2019 she was finally able to pursue her equestrian dream and began taking hunter and dressage lessons. She went in with no expectations, she simply wanted to learn and have fun. Dressage quickly became her favorite, and in 2022 she purchased Kiara, a beautiful Level 3 Dressage Master bay mare, this horse has allowed her to grow exponentially in her riding and she hopes to begin showing in the coming years. North Haven Equestrian immediately became Misty's and Kiara’s home for the purpose of training under Sylwia. Misty worked diligently to learn everything she could, and within five months she became Assistant Barn Manager and Groom of North Haven Equestrian.
